NRD wraps up 2015

In early December 2015 I was proudly elected chair of Nottingham Roller Derby and hit the ground running due to the phenomenal work The Ruth Hurts had done before me.

Ruth has been the guardian of the league for many, many years and has set up an infrastructure that would leave private organisations wanting; now she’s taking a back seat, hanging up her skates for a short time to concentrate on life outside of the derby bubble. (She’ll still be very active in the background so keep an eye out for her epic game day artwork and interpretive dance moves at our home ground the Lee Westwood Centre in 2016.)

It’s been a rollercoaster year for NRG A and SSB who faced some tough competition in the British Champs. Victories were few and far between but the experience we gained was invaluable; both teams came away focused and ready to make their mark on the women’s T4 West division and the men’s T2 respectively. Elsewhere in the league NRG B played two open games, losing by 40 pts to York but gaining a 28 point victory against Norfolk Brawds B.

2015 also saw the brief existence of SSB B who brought a new energy and determination to the league. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. While some SSB members decided to retire at the end of the season, others wanted to form a smaller more independent men’s team and Nottingham Outlaws were formed – catch them in T3 of the Men’s Champs!

Despite the split, I was delighted to see so many of the Outlaws turn up to support the Crimbo Scrimbo Fundraiser for our very own Team Scotland players Owl and Skate Plissken – the co-ed scrim was a success and we’ll be hoping to add a few more pay to play scrims to our calendar so keep an eye out on the Nottingham Roller Derby Facebook page.

Elsewhere, there were a few other changes in the league structure; Coco was elected SSB head coach and NRG A captain, she will be joined by Vice captain GemAarghh. Rox n Rule remains B Team captain and will be assisted by Deezus and, over on the lads side, Skate Plissken moves from vice captain to captain and Singleton will be keeping him in check. A huge thankyou to Natastrophe, Shock & Awedrey, Blake and SufferKate who did an outstanding job in 2015!

As well as the many champs games, B Team fixtures and Friendlies, the whole league has been working hard behind the scenes on Louise Wright’s Legacy – funds kindly donated to NRD following the skaters tragic death in July 2014. On April 16th we are proud to bring you The Louisey Rider Cup a tournament with entertainment, bespoke merch and an epic after party.

Keep an eye on proceedings here: https://www.facebook.com/events/218851691780856/

First things First though, Tattoo Freeze 2016 where the gents take on the Brummies and the ladies settle a score against Wolverhampton who crushed their dreams of 2nd place when they met in their 2014 Heartland Series – And both NRD teams will be sporting their brand new kit!

All the best for 2016.
